Lima & Smith took over the production of Tormes, one of the oldest traditional Vinho Verde brands, in 2018, which opened a new segment of the national and international market for us. With only one brand at the Eça de Queiroz Foundation vineyards to focus on, our winemaker Rui Cunha has managed to fine-tune this traditional Vinho Verde into something quite extraordinary: a wine that is at once friendly, approachable, offers maximum freshness, fruit and balance in a blend of Avesso and Arinto grapes. The result is, as Mark Squires, Portugal critic for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate says: “In this style, this is about as good as it gets.” Colour: Lemon citrus. Nose: Young and intense, reminiscent of citrus and tropical fruits. Slightly floral. Palate: In the mouth it offers a smooth attack, balanced acidity and a fruity and vibrant finish. Excellent as an aperitif, it goes well with fish, seafood and even white meat or traditional Portuguese cod dishes and a variety of snacks.
In partnership with the Fundação Eça de Queiroz, a museum dedicated to the most prolific Portuguese writer of the 19th Century which is close by Covela, we produce Tormes, a classic Vinho Verde with a captivating aroma and a remarkable, fruity freshness that reflects perfectly the terroir of the sub-region of Baião. The granite soils form terraces around the old manor house of Tormes, that was the main scenario in Eça’s last book – The City and the Mountains, and this wine also serves as our tribute to the great author who visited and fell in love with these lands of the Douro Verde over 120 years ago. Here, in the Vinho Verde region but with a panoramic view over the Douro river, we find the perfect terroir for the ripening of the Avesso and Arinto grape varieties – hot days and cool nights, with granitic soil and an almost always blue sky during the growth cycle of the vineyard.
